If a hurricane caused several asphalt shingles to loosen from your garage's rooftop and rainwater has been entering the garage and posing a threat to the structure's interior and the items stored inside of the building, complete the following steps to make the necessary repairs:

Materials

  • weighted drop cloths
  • safety harness
  • extension ladder
  • nail pulling tool
  • sponge
  • bucket of soapy water
  • handheld scrub brush
  • water hose
  • adjustable nozzle
  • roofing cement
  • narrow paintbrush
  • asphalt shingles
  • nail driver
  • rust resistant roofing nails

Remove Damaged Roofing Materials

Lay weighted drop clothes over the garage's flooring and any equipment stored inside of the building so that water doesn't enter the garage while you are spraying the rooftop with water. Put on a safety harness and secure it to a sturdy object on your property. Lean an extension ladder next to the garage and inspect the bottom of the ladder to make sure that it is level. After climbing the ladder, use a nail pulling tool to remove nails from the corners of damaged shingles.

Use soapy water to dampen a sponge or handheld brush and use either tool to loosen roofing cement from the areas where shingles were removed. Secure an adjustable nozzle to a water hose. Adjust the nozzle to one of the strongest settings. Rinse the rooftop with water. Wait for the roof's surface to dry.

Attach Asphalt Shingles To The Rooftop

Use a narrow paintbrush to apply cement to the back side of one of the shingles. Carefully line the shingle up with surrounding shingles and press the new shingle firmly against the roof. Apply cement to the remaining shingles and press them against the roof. Use a nail driver to install rust resistant nails through the corners of each shingle. Wait for the cement to dry thoroughly. This may take several hours, depending upon the temperature and level of humidity outdoors.

Check For Leaks And Maintain The Roofing Materials

While standing on the ladder, turn on the water hose and spray the rooftop for a couple minutes. Climb down the ladder and go inside of the garage. Inspect the roof's ceiling to determine if any water is leaking through. If the ceiling remains dry, the shingles have been installed properly. Inspect the roofing materials and clean them when necessary. Remove branches and leaves from the rooftop after severe weather has passed through the region you live in. These basic maintenance steps will prevent damage to roofing materials.
