Aluminum gutters have a number of benefits over other types of gutter systems. They are lightweight, immune to rust and mold growth, and extremely durable, allowing them to continue to drain water away from your roof and home despite excessive long term weather exposure. However, one of the lesser touted benefits associated with aluminum gutters is the fact that they can be painted to customize the appearance of the exterior of your home.

Before You Begin

Before you start painting your gutters, you should gather all the tools and materials that you may need in order to speed the process up as much as possible. You'll need a paint scraper, sponges, a bucket full of warm soapy water, a garden hose, a ladder, exterior oil-based primer, oil-based enamel, and oil-based paint, as well as paintbrushes. You may want to have a friend hold your ladder while you're working. All of these items can be found at most hardware stores if you don't already have them at home.

Painting Aluminum Gutters

First things first, you'll want to remove any old paint that may be on your gutters using the paint scraper. If your gutters have never been painted, you can just skip this step.

Next, you'll want to clean away any dirt to ensure proper adhesion of the paint to the aluminum, so you should rub down the entirety of your gutters using a sponge and warm soapy water.

Once your gutters have been cleaned, rinse them off with the hose and let them dry completely.

After your gutters are completely dry, you can begin to apply the primer to your gutters using a paintbrush. Be sure to spread the primer out in thin layers, as this will dry quicker and allow for a cleaner looking coat.

Once the primer has been applied to the entirety of the surface of your gutters, you will then need to apply the enamel. Apply using a paintbrush (a clean one, not the one you used for the primer), again applying in a thin layer. The enamel acts as structural support for the gutters themselves, and helps prevent physical damage from occurring. You'll want to apply two coats of enamel: wait for the first one to be completely dry before you apply a second.

Once both coats of enamel have been applied and dried, you can then begin to paint your gutters, taking care to use a clean paintbrush again. You should apply at least two coats of paint, but three coats will provide you with the best amount of durability without causing flaking, dripping or sagging once the paint dries.
