Protect your garage's tar and gravel flat roof from leaks by installing a rubber membrane over it. A rubber membrane will provide the rooftop with a uniform appearance and the material can easily be maintained.

Clean The Roof And Gutter System
Put on a safety harness before climbing an extension ladder that leads to the rooftop. Once on the roof, use a broom to collect large pieces of debris. Remove leaves and twigs that are stuck inside the gutters by hand or with a small shovel. Prepare a cleaning solution that contains equal amounts of industrial strength detergent, oxygenated bleach, and water. Fill a garden sprayer's reservoir with the cleaning agent.
Apply the cleaning solution to the flat roof's surface. If portions of the gutter system are stained, spray them with the solution as well. Use a scrub brush to work the cleaning solution into surfaces that have been treated. Use a water hose to rinse off the soapy water and wait for the rooftop to dry.
Secure The Roofing Membrane
After measuring the length and width of the rooftop, purchase a roofing membrane that is a little bit larger than the measurements. Fold the membrane in half and carry it up the ladder and onto the rooftop. Go down the ladder to retrieve roofing cement, a thick-napped paint roller, extension pole, and paint tray. Once back up on the rooftop, use the paint roller to apply a thin, even coat of roofing cement to one side of the roof.
Unfold the roofing membrane and line up one half of it over the cement-covered rooftop. Press the membrane down firmly. Move a clean paint roller over the membrane in straight lines to assist with adhesion and to eliminate wrinkles. Apply a coat of roofing cement to the other half of the rooftop before pressing the remaining half of the membrane against it. Again, move a paint roller over the membrane in straight lines.
Install Nails And Maintain The Membrane
Use a power nail gun to install roofing nails through the corners of the membrane and roof. The nails will assist with stabilizing the membrane. Maintain the membrane by rinsing it off with a water hose on occasion and removing surface stains with a scrub brush and detergent that has been mixed with water.
